CONNECT
The District’s coalition project is not only to connect with other theatre companies, but to connect with the community. Want to be a part of The District? Here are a few great opportunities!

Volunteer Opportunities
There are many ways you can help us create an extraordinary theater-going experience for our patrons! Below are only a few of the ways you can get involved and build a relationship with each
Theatre company:
Office and Public Relations: Greet visitors, transfer calls, and perform light administrative tasks as you interact with students, staff, and artists! You will also assist our teams with mailing of press releases, subscriptions, invitations, and more.

Box Office and Ushering:
Box Office and Ushering are an extremely important facet of each organization. Gain experience in event management and hospitality, while getting to meet the actors/artists in the shows! *Ushers receive a complimentary ticket to the show the night they are scheduled!

Distributing Flyers:
Being a part of our targeted marketing team is a great way to get to know other organizations and community members, while spreading the word about what we do!

Education: Each theater has an educational facet of their programming, and are looking for individuals interested in becoming a teacher’s assistant, chaperone for field trips/youth show tours, and backstage help during youth productions. Pre-service are also encouraged to volunteer, as there are many internship possibilities in this field.

Production:
For each show we need many hands on deck for weeks that we build and paint. We also have opportunities for people looking to help backstage and with cleanup! This is an especially wonderful opportunity to get some hands on experience backstage for individuals looking for a production Internship or Job Shadowing experience in the future.

Common Questions
What is the difference between being a Volunteer and an Intern?
Internships are typically given to an individual looking for focused experience/study in a particular area (teaching, production, administration, marketing, etc.). Typically Interns are affiliated with a university, training program, or course of study. A Volunteer is a community member who volunteers their time and serves on a committee, regardless of whether or not they are a student. Volunteers may do an array of different tasks for the organizations, while interns will typically only be assigned tasks within their concentration area.

Building knowledge, Building resumes, Building relationships…Building resources
An important piece of The District’s mission is to mobilize resources to strengthen our community. In order to accomplish this mission, The District strives to build partnerships with other organizations, create ways for community members to learn from one another, and shape future opportunities for children and teens to experience the arts.

Classes, Workshops, and Theatre Experience
The District has made available to community members class and workshop opportunities for children, teens, and adults. Each theater company has opportunities. In addition to taking a class, many also have opportunities for community members to audition and take part in theatrical productions.

Season Auditions are typically held in March, but other opportunities become available throughout the year. Be sure to check us out on Facebook to keep informed on upcoming workshop and audition opportunities!

Internship Opportunities
Internship Opportunities are available for students, recent graduates, and seasoned workers looking to build their knowledge base and resume.

Instructional Intern:
These internships will give students an opportunity to study curriculum design and pedagogy through practical application. Instructional Interns will also interact with and teach children and teens enrolled in educational programming.

Event Management Intern: These internships will give students looking for administrative experience an opportunity to work events, learn different processes for payment and registration, and assist in developing targeted marketing plans for special events and fundraisers.

Production Intern:
These internships give students an opportunity to learn what it takes to work in production. Students will utilize the skills they have developed in their program to help with set design and assembly and/or costume design and assembly. Several openings are available for students wishing to gain experience working as a board operator (sound and/or light).

Music Performance Intern:
Music Performance internships give music students an opportunity to gain experience by performing in a theatrical production. Students will participate in the rehearsal process, and learn what it is like to perform alongside actors.

Costume Design Intern:
The Costume Designer will spend time developing their skills as designers. Students will also be asked to participate in helping with assembly, educating performers on their costume, run fittings, etc.

Job Shadowing Opportunities
Starting in January 2013, The District will have Job Shadowing opportunities that give community members and students an inside look at a specific career; light design, sound design, educational leadership, production design, music performance, and more. A participant in the Job Shadowing program will experience a typical workday and see first-hand how the organization runs, and how work gets done in the field of their choosing. They learn the expectations arts organizations have of new employees, and gain a sense of how that work fits their interests and skills. The schedule for a Job Shadowing participant can vary from a few days to possibly a full semester. It is likely you will spend most of your time observing others, asking questions, and getting advice and information.

What is the difference between an Internship and Job Shadowing Experience?
Internships are typically done for course credit, affiliated with a university or course of study. The Job Shadowing Experience is open to any adult, whether or not they are part of a specific program. University students wishing to Job Shadow will need to seek approval from their training program and/or the Educational Director.

Central to the mission of The District is a goal among its founding partners to share resources, creativity and volunteers. Securing new storage space common to the three companies during Fall, 2012 was an important first step. From properties and scenery, to set decorations and costumes, physical resources are already being shared and incorporated as our 2012-13 seasons are produced.

This spirit of cooperation and support will continue to grow as sales and sponsorship connections are exchanged, along with volunteer development and creative collaboration.
